Green solvents are environmentally friendly alternatives to conventional, petroleum-based solvents, designed to minimise the negative impacts of the chemical industry on health and the environment. They are often derived from renewable resources like agricultural crops, are biodegradable, have low toxicity, and can be recycled or efficiently produced. Other examples are supercritical fluids (such as water, nitrogen and carbon dioxide), ionic liquids, deep eutectic solvents and bio-based liquids.
